From July 19 - 23, Culture Shock LA held a summer dance intensive at SIPA. Thank you to all of those who came! We had a great turnout and we hope to work with SIPA again in the future. Here are some pics from the week:

An overnight sensation, Thomas’ Rhythm Nation 1814 tele-musical won a Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video, MTV’s Music Award for Best Choreography and the MTV Vanguard Award. The video is ranked on MTV and VH1’s lists of Greatest 100 Videos of all time.

His innovative gift of versatility and physical rhythm, earned him an honored place in music history when he combined popping and locking for the first time. The marriage of these two forms of street dance changed the direction of hip hop and created a standard of excellence in the world that has yet to be matched since Rhythm Nation.

Emiko Sugiyama was born in Tokyo, Japan and began dancing classical ballet at the age of 7 and moved to Davis, CA in 1999. She attended the University of California, Davis and Sacramento College to study Physical therapy. There, she met a group of B-boys and competed at various breakin’ events throughout Northern California and became a member of “ Flexible Flave”.

In 2001, Emiko moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dance career where she joined the hip hop dance company called “One Step Ahead.” In 2004, she moved to NYC and became a member of Illstyle and Peace Production and has been performing with them nationally and internationally in countries including Russia, Poland, Liberia and Canada. While living in NY, she went to clubs every night and learned House dance from legendary house dancers such as Terry Wright, Brian “Footwork” Green, Buddha Stretch, and Marjory Smarth. Emiko also taught Breakin’ at Broadway Dance Center, Peridance, and other dance studios within the New York area.

Emiko had been invited to compete breakin’ battles in San Francisco, Paris, and the UK. In 2008, Emiko produced an all elements Hiphop youth summer camp called Hip Hop Island in Philadelphia. Currently, Emiko lives in Los Angeles where she opened the dance studio called Odoru Dance Studio, and organized “Open House” –a weekly house dance session in downtown LA. Her credits include: Sacramento Kings (NBA and WNBA) half time show, Breakestra Music Video “ Get Your Soul Together,” Warp Tour in Las Vegas, Thalia feat. Fat Joe “I want you” Lipton tour 2003 on ABC Good Morning America, KRS One Warren G & Lil Ai Music video, NIKE Town in store commercial, and Rennie Harris’ Puremovement. Emiko aspires to share not only her skills and abilities, but also her individuality and personality through dance.
